Entrepreneurial spirit and an educational tradition run deep in the Champlain Valley. It is a region filled with history, culture and natural beauty. There is always something to do, whether it's enjoying a late lunch on Church Street's pedestrian marketplace, taking a stroll along the trails of historic Shelburne Farms or enjoying a Vermont Expos baseball game on a warm summer evening. Factory tours are a fun way to spend the day, as our famous Vermont companies create chocolate, teddy bears, ice cream, snowboards and more.

All of the following are easy day trips from Westport.

Basin Harbor Club
Basin Harbor - Located on 700 acres just across Lake Champlain from Westport (a 10-15 minute boat ride), the Basin Harbor Club is a summer vacation getaway offering a range of outdoor activities. The resort has a 18-hole golf course, tennis courts and a heated pool.

Burlington Church Street cafe
Burlington - an hour and half drive from Westport or about the same if you take the Ferry from Essex, Burlington is one of the most culturally diverse small cities anywhere. The University of Vermont and such major employers as IBM have brought people from around the world. So enjoy a day trip. Shop on Church Street, visit the farmer's market or enjoy one of the city's many sidewalk cafes.

Middlebury College
Middlebury - Only 45 minutes from Westport, Middlebury is a beautiful quintessential New England village with its white steepled church overlooking Main Street and its vibrant citizenry and home of Middlebury College, one of the finest liberal arts colleges in the country.

Town of Shelburne, Vermont
Shelburne - Located on the shores of Lake Champlain just a few minutes south of Burlington, Shelburne is home to some of the more popular Vermont attractions: the Vermont Teddy Bear Company, Shelburne Farms and arguably the best historical museum in New England, the Shelburne Museum.

Trapp Family Lodge
Stowe - Only Stowe combines a classic 200-year-old village with Mt. Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak. This unique juxtaposition imbues Stowe with a character reminiscent of great European mountain resorts. The world famous Trapp Family Lodge (pictured) is one of the many places to see.

Vergennes, Vermont
Vergennes -The only one of Vermont's cities never to have been first chartered as a town or independant village. It is the third oldest city in the US (only Hartford and New Haven, Connecticut are older) and with just under 1,200 acres, it is thought to be the smallest city in the US.

Lipizzan Stallions on North Hero Island
Vermont Islands - The islands of Lake Champlain, South Hero and North Hero which include North Hero State Park, Burton Island State Park, Knight Island State Park and Woods Island State Park are less than an hour by car from Burlington. See the Lipizzan Stallions perform during the summer.
