Lake Champlain Area Weather

Ballard Park in Westport, NY

The weather on Lake Champlain is perfect for sumer-type activities from the beginning of June through Labor Day. Days are typically warm and nights comfortable, though July and August vacationers will experience some humid evenings. For those who like to spend a lot of time in the water, July and August are the best months. The water is still warming in June and cooling off in September. If being on the water rather than in the water is your thing, then add June and September to your options. For sightseers and golfers, Memorial Day to Columbus Day bring beautiful days, though nights in late September and early October can be chilly.

Like most other places around the country and world, the summer climate on Lake Champlain seems to be getting warmer. The summer of 2005 brought a consistently southerly flow with warm days and nights. When the wind is out of the south, the Cottage is relatively sheltered and the Lake tends to be warm - water temperature in the mid to high 70's. Most days begin with a flat calm that can last into mid and late morning. Typically the breeze will pick up around noon, and if the wind is brisk and out of the northeast, the air temperature on the front porch can feel 10 to 15 degrees cooler than it does on the back porch. While swimming and boating are less comfortable on days with a good northeast wind, the air becomes crystal clear, thus making the views spectacular.

Rainy summer days are relatively rare, though like most places a bad few days here and there are possible. The upside of the occassional rainy day is the Lake itself. Watching the weather come across the Lake, especially thunderstorms can be great fun. The cottage has plenty of board games and puzzles to keep people busy. And, depending on where the weather is coming from, rainy days on the Lake may not mean a washout for a drive in the mountains, or shopping in Burlington.
