The Champlain/Adirondack Region

Adirondack High Peaks region

Originally settled in 1785, the historic village of Westport is nestled on the banks of the Northwest Harbor of Lake Champlain in the heart of the Adirondack Park and the Champlain Valley. It provides the perfect base from which to explore the many historical, cultural, and outdoor activities of this beautiful area.

Tour to the west and the Olympic Village of Lake Placid is but a scenic 35 minute drive. Close by is Whiteface Mountain with the highest vertical drop in the East at 3,430 feet. Visit the charming towns of Keene and Keene Valley, home to the High Peaks, 46 breathtaking mountains featuring Mt. Marcy the highest peak in N. Y. at 5,344 feet. 35 miles further brings you to Blue Mountain Lake and the Adirondack Museum, an open air museum set on 32 beautifully landscaped acres with 37 separate historic buildings housing exhibits depicting Adirondack history.

Fort Ticonderoga

Head south for 45 miles to Fort Ticonderoga, a restored 18th century fort prominent in both the French and Indian and Revolutionary wars. Observe fort life as it was in those days. 25 miles further south brings Lake George, Queen of the American Lakes and the bustling Lake George Village.

Historic village of Essex, NY

Cross Lake Champlain on the Ferry at Essex (the entire village is on the National Historic Register) just 12 miles north for visits to Burlington, Vermont. The Shelburne Museum located on 45 acres with 37 buildings housing exhibits and the completely restored paddle wheel steamship Ticonderoga. Save time too for visits to the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory, Ben & Jerry's ice cream plant, and the marvelous Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, famous for depicting the history of the lake. Add to all of this, dozens of walking, hiking, and climbing trails all through the area, an 1187 mile network of cycling routes, great fishing, magnificent scenery everywhere and it's no wonder that so many visitors are attracted to the Adirondacks every season of the year.
